The state House of Representatives passed nearly 270 bills in 2011. So far, 148 of those measures have been signed into law by the governor. Some of the legislative highlights include:
Reforming the state’s welfare system to cut waste, fraud and abuse through the implementation of a cross-reference system on an applicant’s eligibility, subjecting drug felons to random drug testing, and ensuring applicants only receive benefits in their county of residence.
Updating the state’s driving laws, including a ban on texting while behind the wheel for all Pennsylvanians and improvements to the teen driver law, including passenger limits for junior drivers and increased behind-the-wheel training.
Changing the Commonwealth’s liability laws to prevent lawsuit abuse by making defendants pay only their fair share of damages in a lawsuit.
Creating a comprehensive, searchable online database of all state expenditures to keep government more open and accountable to taxpayers.
Limiting the circumstances under which school districts can request property tax increases above a state-set inflationary index without referendum approval of voters.
Strengthening the state’s Megan’s Law to close loopholes dealing with homeless or transient sex offenders.
Allowing an individual the right to use lethal force in self-defense when threatened in a home, vehicle or anywhere else he or she has a legal right to be.
